It’s awards season and at the Wordsmith Partnership HQ we are busy putting together numerous award entries for our clients. If, like us, you are busy writing award entries and could do with some tips or words of wisdom, see below.
Don’t enter for the sake of entering
Winning awards is great for your business as it can help increase visibility, set you apart from your competition and improve employee morale, but don’t just enter for the sake of entering an award. Qualify whether you have anything that is award worthy before you spend time and money putting together an award that you simply won’t be in with the chance of winning.
Concentrate on what makes you different
Award winners offer something different. They go above and beyond and they are able to demonstrate how they do this. When you are writing your entry read it back and keeping asking yourself “so what?”. If you think any of the points you are making appear dull and don’t sound like they make a difference or are different, it may be worth omitting them for something else.
Use statistics and evidence to backup your claims
The most beautifully written award can make claims about how amazing the business is, but without something to back these claims up the information is useless. Backup all your claims with evidence. This evidence can be anything from statistics to testimonials. Strong statistics are gold when it comes to writing an award entry.
Anonymous testimonials aren’t much value
Testimonials are great to use in an award entry as they add weight to the claims that you are making and can be very persuasive. Anonymous testimonials aren’t ideal, however. Try to include the name, job title and business your testimonial is from and also explain how it is relevant to the points you are making.
Stick to the word count
Don’t forget to keep checking the word count. Most awards have maximum word counts for each question and if you are over you could be penalised or worst still disqualified!
